Pierce started on the outside of the front row alongside pole
sitter Chris Madden. It was Madden who grabbed the lead with Pierce
and Overton battling for second. Madden had firm control of the
race throughout much of the first half of the race. Overton ran
down Madden and used the outside line to get around Madden on
lap 37.
Overton looked to be in firm control until lap 48. Dennis Erb
Jr. made contact with another car and was sitting in the middle
of the track going into turn 3. Before the caution could be displayed,
Overton t-boned Erb in a violent crash. Madden also caught a piece
of Overton’s car and sent him spinning and out of the race.
Pierce inherited the lead and held off Nick Hoffman to win and
collect $20,000. Ricky Thornton was third.
Trevor Sise led flag-to-flag to win Saturday’s sportsman
late model feature. Sise battle Jared Delk on the first couple
of laps before securing the lead. Delk held off several challengers
to finish second and Terry Poore came from 7th to finish third.
The front wheel drive feature several an intense battle at the
front of the field. Nathan Adams came from 4th to win the race.
Pole sitter Dustin Holt led early only before Kevin McKenize took
the lead. After Holt fell out, a three-wide battle for the lead
developed between McKenzie, Adams, and Jason Ketron. Adams finally
took the lead with a few laps to go to get the win. McKenzie held
on for second and Ketron finish in third.
The next race at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Saturday, April 11
with the first round of the Saturday Night Shootout races. The
Mountain late models, sportsman late models, street stocks, front
wheel drives, and crown vics will be racing along with the kids’
juice box races during intermission.
