September 22nd, 2012 – Late Model driver Shannon Buckingham was back in Mod Lite action Saturday night. Shannon made it pretty convincing that late model experience pays off as he is the second winner of the weekend from the late model ranks of dirt track racing. After winning Friday night at Spring City Raceway, Ross White won the first heat race at Smoky Mountain and Shannon Buckingham picked up the second heat race win. That put the two late model aces on the front row for the 15 lap main event paying $400 to win.

Twelve cars made the field for Saturday’s showdown. At the drop of the green Buckingham and White checked out fast. The racing was fast and furious behind them. The rest of the field swapped positions numerous times in the background while White gave chase to Buckingham. Just when the race seemed to settle down disaster struck at the end of the back stretch. Tony Kelly in the 3K car made the slightest contact with Jeremy Holtzclaw sending the 3K for a ride that won’t soon be forgotten. Tony walked away in pain from a destroyed race car and was taken to the hospital for precautionary measures. You can watch a live on board of the accident here:¬†

After a lengthy red flag to clear the track the race resumed with Buckingham and White up front. The race behind them settled down again. White made one last attempt at the lead on the last lap but spun himself out. Ross made a complete 360 degree spin out of it all the while never losing 2nd place. Buckingham went on to victory lane after passing post race tech followed by White, Knoedler, Stout, VanWhy, Trent, Jones, Kelly, Holtzclaw, Maples, Rowland and Jones.
