Chris Tilley has worked in and around dirt late model racing for much of his adult life. Most recently, he served as the head of the STARS Volunteer Racing Series and the STARS Midwest Dirt Racing League. Those two series’ had to be shut down before the 2012 season began due to financial considerations.
This Saturday at the Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, Tennessee, Tilley will resume working in the sport he loves so much. He will serve as the race director for the Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series $5,000 to win show on that 4/10 mile banked clay oval.
This will be the headliner for the season opening of the Smoky Mountain Speedway and will be the second race for the series. Last week, Jimmy Owens took home a $10,000 first prize when he won the SAS Shamrock 50 at the Cleveland Speedway.
“I couldn’t be at the Cleveland race due to a previously planned family trip to Destin, Florida,” Tilley explained. “But Lynn Acklin(of SAS) called me and needs some help this weekend. It may be for the rest of the year after we see how this weekend goes.”
Tilley also handles announcing duties for the Ray Cook promoted Schaeffer Oil Southern Nationals Series which takes place over a two week span each July.
